Dimming at night, in your own time zone
The wall can dim at night: a lower brightness between the hours you choose. There was a catch. The board's clock runs on UTC, and the night schedule was worked out by the server's clock. For me that happened to work. For someone in California, the board would dim three hours early.
The fix
- Every account has a time zone, filled in from your browser the first time you open the app, and changeable in Settings.
- The board gets your zone's rules, including when daylight saving time starts and ends, along with your night hours and both brightness levels.
- The board decides day or night itself, so it switches at the right local time even when it's offline.
- It remembers the zone across restarts, so after a power outage it knows local time as soon as its clock is set.
I checked the rules against real cases: at the same moment it's night in Georgia, evening in California and Arizona, and afternoon in Hawaii, and in Georgia the clock skips from 1:59 to 3:00 on the morning daylight saving time begins.
